Jones, Sonnen, chicken parm and the phone call

UFC light heavyweights Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen talk about their experience coaching on the latest version of 'The Ultimate Fighter' show. Videojournalists: Mario Gonzalez and Mark LaMonica (Jan. 23, 2013)

Above these words, on both the website and our apps, you'll see the first of our videos from Wednesday's sitdown with Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen. This particular video focuses on their time coaching fighters on Season 17 of "The Ultimate Fighter," which began airing this week.

But here's a fun little story from earlier that day.

During the informal lunch at Carmine's, a family style Italian restaurant in Manhattan, Sonnen stood up from his corner seat and walked over to Jones in the opposite corner. Sonnen carried his phone and handed it to Jones.

Sonnen asked Jones to give some words of encouragement to one of the kids from his wrestling club back in Oregon. Jones obliged.

"Hello," Jones said.

A moment of silence.

"No, this is Jon 'Bones' Jones."

Jones then looked up and said the kid thought it was Sonnen trying to throw his voice to sound like Jones.

They spoke for another minute or two, then the final, most important question.

"Are you Team Jones or Team Sonnen," the UFC light heavyweight champion asked the 15-year-old on the other side of the phone (and country).

Presumably, the teen favored his wrestling coach because Jones responded with "Wrong answer" and handed the phone back to Sonnen.

It will be fun to reconcile that moment come fight week in April in Newark when the Jones and Sonnen are talking a little trash at news conferences. Jones makes his fifth title defense April 27 at UFC 159 at the Prudential Center.
