Shaolin Warriors at Stony Brook's Staller Center
You don't often see the words "Warrior" and "Buddhist" in the same sentence. But that's how it is with the Shaolin Warriors, "disciples" of the ancient kung fu practice of self-defense developed by Buddhist monks in China. The Warriors will demonstrate their remarkable mind-over-body mastery at Staller Center as part of their three-month American tour.
"What you see on TV or the movies is not real," says company interpreter Han Wanqiao. "It's very exaggerated. It's done with technology -- camera tricks. Here, you'll see Warriors jumping very high with a spear or using a sharp knife to slice Chinese cabbage on their belly. It looks crazy," he adds with a laugh.
