Kerry Washington dons FLOTUS dress on SNL
Art imitated life on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” last week when guest host Kerry Washington, who opened the show impersonating Michelle Obama, wore a Tracy Reese dress that FLOTUS actually owns -- and wore in September.
Yep, Obama donned the flared, black $498 frock embellished with giant red poppies and a bit of beading to the “Let Freedom Ring” ceremony for the 50th anniversary celebration of Martin Luther King’s "March on Washington.”
Reese is a go-to designer for the first lady. She is African-American and her signature silo is strong but feminine. Her garments have that distinctively ladylike yet saucy verve favorited by Obama.
The sketch addressed the show’s lack of diversity -- there are no black, female comics on "SNL," and Washington, who did double duty -- (that was the joke) -- also riffed on Oprah Winfrey, in a shirred blue jersey dress.
While the issue of diversity is a serious one, hats off to "SNL’s" costume department. It was spot on, save for the Obama ‘do, which was swept up in real life, though Washington wore her hair down.
