Each year, color authority Pantone picks a hue that will inevitably rule every industry, from fashion and interior design to automotive and gardening.

The  color for 2012 was tangerine tango, a bright, juicy hue that inspired citrus gowns at plenty of red carpet events.

For 2013, Pantone went with a more earthy choice in emerald green, or, as they put it on their website, "Lively. Radiant. Lush . . . A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony."

Jewel tones have been popular for some time, but many speculate the choice was inspired by trendsetting Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, who often wears the color. She was most recently spotted in an emerald Alexander McQueen design in her first public appearance since morning sickness likely turned her another shade of green.

The color surely made an impact on the spring-summer 2013 runways at New York Fashion Week, stealing the show at Nanette Lepore and popping up at Michael Kors, Monique Lhuillier, Vera Wang and others.

Lepore told Newsday at Fashion Week that her use of green was inspired by trips to Ireland, while Lhuillier said she got the idea from the gleaming sea in Turkey.

"The green was inspired when my husband bought a cottage in Ireland," Lepore said. "We went over there, and it was just a beautiful, green, pastoral place."

Whatever the appeal, one thing is for sure -- we'll all be seeing green in 2013. Will you be jumping on the emerald bandwagon? Comment below, and check out 10 ways to get a head start on the trend.
