Meryl Davis and Charlie White: Gold medalist ice dancing duo is back in the USA
Gold medalist ice dancing duo Meryl Davis and Charlie White are back in the United States and heading to NYC where they’ll hit the talk show circuit and make an exclusive appearance at the Ralph Lauren Madison Avenue store on Wednesday.
The breakout stars from the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, were the first Americans ever to win an ice dance gold medal. And now, a lot of folks are talking about their next move which includes a slew of potential endorsements and a rumored gig on the ABC monster hit “Dancing With the Stars.”
Said White, 26, “It’s a super exciting rumor and working with Derek,” (as in Derek Hough, the "DWTS" cast member, who helped choreograph their ice dance), “we went to the show and it would be a dream for us. They’ll take our appreciation for dancing to another level.” But according to White, there’s been no contact yet.
So what do Olympic gold medalists do après a win?
“Well we definitely ate a little differently in the dining hall," said Davis, 27. “There was this huge bin of Nutella and I took part in it.” As for White? “There was a McDonald’s in the dining hall,” he said of his splurge. “The whole week we were there I was eyeing it, so after we won I went for ice cream and chicken nuggets. It was just what I needed.”
As for grooming secrets, here’s one: White’s flowing mane has no product in it on the ice. “It’s supposed to have movement,” he said, though off the ice, he generally uses Pantene products. “I’m not very picky about products. I owe my hair to genetics and my parents."
And Davis, whose dramatic, bold lip became a signature during the competition, has her own recipe. “I use a lot of shades that I just end up mixing together,” she says. And her preferred brand, she says, is “Covergirl Long Lasting because it doesn’t wear off while I’m skating.”
After their NYC blitz, which includes interviews on the “Today” show, fittings at Ralph Lauren and their appearance there, the two will head back to Michigan, where, says Davis, “We’re going to get some sleep.” Well-deserved.
If you want to see the champions and maybe score an autograph, they’ll be at the Ralph Lauren flagship store at 888 Madison Ave., Manhattan, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. For more information, call 212-434-8000.
