'Skinnygirl' Bethenny Frankel on the stiletto workout
"I felt a little slutty . . . in a good way," Bethenny Frankel laughed as she sat on the floor of a Manhattan exercise studio in yoga pants, a Skinnygirl tank and red Manolo Blahnik pumps.
A brave group of editors had just traded in sneakers for stilettos for a workout class with the Skinnygirl Daily founder and reality TV star after trying some of her health-conscious products for women.
It was Frankel's first time trying the workout, but the fashion loving mom is no stranger to fancy shoes, estimating she has more than 100 pairs.
"When I leave the house I'm usually in heels," she said, "but having a child and pushing that stroller, you feel like an idiot. The thing is I'm always in pajamas; I'm always home . . . so when I leave I want to look good."
The NDG Fit classes include moves like squats, lunges, kicks and leg raises while wearing heels. The heels force you into a constant calf raise, a trainer explained, creating extra resistance and toning the calves, thighs and butt. To stay balanced, women must focus on their breathing, controlled movements and contracting the abdominals, which also helps to tighten muscles and improve posture.
"I had a preconceived notion that it would be a gimmick and that it would annoy me, but it was an actual workout," Frankel said of the class.
Though she looked in perfect shape, Frankel said she doesn't obsess over her diet or exercise routine like she used to. She doesn't belong to a gym and works out two to three times a week, doing a DVD at home or taking a long walk.
"I know that I'm in good shape and I am blessed in that way," she admitted. "I just always like for my jeans to fit."
In the past, Frankel admitted to binging and then trying every fad diet out there, from the cabbage soup diet to the stewardess diet. Now, she focuses on eating healthy but isn't afraid to indulge now and then. "A bowl of salty chips makes me happy," she says.
It was her passion for making healthy eating practical for busy, everyday women that inspired her to create the Skinnygirl brand. (Remember those low-cal margaritas? Genius.)
Skinnygirl's On the Go nutrition collection now includes a variety of 180-calorie bars in tasty flavors like dark chocolate pretzel and coconut peanut butter, a gentle cleanse and vitamin power packets for immunity, energy, hair and nail strength and relaxation. They're for sale at skinnygirldaily.com.
