Donate prom dresses, accessories for LI teens in need
As the average high school girl prepares for prom, it can be easy to get caught up in the search for the perfect dress, the glamorous hairstyles and the makeup appointments. But for others who are less fortunate, it's a source of stress as they try to figure out how they are going to even buy a dress at all. This year, more Long Islanders are struggling than ever after superstorm Sandy, and the Long Island Volunteer Center and Nassau Community College are here to help.
This will be the 19th year that they host their “Prom Boutique” event, and they're hoping to get more prom dress and accessory donations than ever. Last year, more than 2,500 dresses were donated, many from top retailers.
“This is a program that touches the lives of young ladies in a very personal and meaningful way,“ said Diana O'Neil, executive director of the Long Island Volunteer Center, “as prom is a threshold event and right of passage from high school to the next chapter of their lives.“
Drop-off sites are placed around Long Island and anyone with new or gently used dresses, prom gowns, bridesmaid gowns, special occasion shoes, costume jewelry and other accessories are asked to donate by April 7.
Students who are in need of a dress should have their high school guidance counselors reach out to the Long Island Volunteer Center at 516-564-5482. They will be invited to Nassau Community College to pick out their prom looks.
