The ways guys dress on Long Island is a lot like driving on the Expressway. You've got three lanes to choose from, four if you count the HOV. The right lane is safest, veering toward preppy - guys who wear lots of khaki, crew neck sweaters and button-down shirts. Loafers, too. The middle lane is for your laid-back, anti-fashion dudes in baggy jeans and XXXL rock concert tees, maybe a plaid flannel shirt and always sneakers. (Or Timberlands.) The fast lane is for your dandy types, hip to designer labels and trends. And the HOV lane? The guys who travel in packs (two or more required in this lane), and whose confidence and flashy style - tight tees, pricey denim, jewelry - set LIers apart from other tri-state suburbanites.
Connecticut? Westchester? Please, those bros are bland and cookie-cutter compared to the spicy mix of styles you see on LI guys on any given day, from Great Neck to Amagansett, Cedarhurst to Southold.
And the Island has plenty of menswear shops to serve this varied population. Here are a few faves, plus some big name chains, that keep local dudes as stylish or comfortable (or both) as they wanna be.
