Description:

It is hard to know where to look first at Chocolate Works in Commack. The two cases of chocolates command attention, as does the display of self-serve candy. Custom-molded chocolates range from life-size legs to old-fashioned telephones.

Beyond the coffee bar in back is a brightly decorated room equipped with low tables and two dozen child-size chairs. Look up toward the ceiling, and you’ll see the lyrics from “The Candy Man” painted around the walls.

In the end, though, who can take their eyes off the chocolate-making machinery that lines one whole wall of the shop? Two temperature-controlled vats hold melted chocolate (dark and milk) next to which there’s a dipping and cooling station, and then the 25-foot-long chocolate “enrober,” a machine familiar to anyone who has seen the candy-making episode of “I Love Lucy.”

“Customers like to see stuff being made,” said Chris Daniels, who owns the shop with his wife, Rhonda. Customers also get the opportunity to make chocolate. On weekend days and weeknights, the shop hosts parties where up to 25 kids can make and decorate their own molded chocolate, and watch their own confections roll out on the machine’s conveyor belt.

The Commack store, which opened Sept. 14, is the first Long Island franchise of the Valley Stream business formerly called 5th Avenue Chocolatiere. Valley Stream, which is a chocolate manufacturer in addition to a retailer, supplies Commack with fancy truffles ($24 a pound); the store makes most of the dipped and chocolate-coated items ($20).
