In the 13 years Patrice Richardson has run Act II, she has watched the consignment industry bloom. “When I first opened there were no other consignment stores in the area,” she says. “When the economy started going bad, people started to shop this way. Now, more and more people are really getting into the idea.”

The store caters to women of a variety of ages with budgets both big and small, ranging from high-end couture designers such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci and Fendi to mainstream brands including J. Crew, Free People, Coach, Tory Burch, Guess and Calvin Klein.

“In this economy, consignment makes so much sense,” says Barbara Oldenburg, 63, of Commack, who has been both consigning and shopping at Act II since it opened. “Patrice knows the value of everything and that translates to a win-win situation for both the seller and the customer.”

Oldenburg has consigned everything from a mink coat to diamond jewelry, and has picked up some of her favorite wardrobe pieces plus gifts for others at the store including shoes, Armani suits, Gucci handbags and silk scarves.

“The designer shoes are the best,” she says. “You’ll never end up with sore feet because someone has broken them in already for you.”

A blowout sale with items for $10 or less takes place every February and August, as the inventory changes seasons. Current merchandise includes a Christian Dior fur coat for $995, a Louis Vuitton tote for $395, Gucci sunglasses for $129 and never worn Brian Atwood pumps for $249. New designer perfumes are for sale for about half their regular retail prices.

“Customers and consignors don’t find my store intimidating,” Richardson says. “I really believe that that’s what keeps them coming back.”

Consign: Seasonal designer clothing from the past two years or top designer vintage pieces are accepted in top condition. The consignor receives 50 percent of the sale price minus $1.
