The Palisades Center in West Nyack, the tenth largest shopping mall in the country, will undergo a makeover starting later this month, it was announced Friday.

"It will be a multimillion dollar makeover," Leemarie Dell'Accio, the mall's marketing director, said, declining to provide specifics on the cost. "The makeover will start in a few weeks, with completion by the end of 2013."

A four-story, industrial-style structure that opened in 1998, the Palisades Center in recent years has started showing the wear and tear of accommodating an estimated 24 million visitors a year. Spotted carpets, cracked flooring, well-worn seating and patched parking lots greet shoppers today.

The mall, which houses 250 specialty shops and anchor stores such as Target, Home Depot and Lord & Taylor, will be remodeled with an eye toward sophistication, Dell'Accio said.

Soft seating, custom planters and plush carpets will be built in some areas. A warm color scheme will be used to soften the institutional beige that now exists and colored glass mosaics, ceiling facets and designer lighting will be added. WIFI will be installed, and the restrooms will be remodeled.

The four-story court at the center of the mall will be redone to incorporate glass handrails and architectural lighting elements, according to a news release. The "ThEATery" area on level 4 -- home to a 21-screen movie theater, a comedy club and several full-service restaurants -- will be given a posh makeover with tile floors and chandelier fixtures.

The Pyramid Companies, the Palisades Center's developer and still owner, first revealed the remodeling Friday on Twitter in a virtual news conference.

The company's virtual spokesperson demurred when asked if the renovations were a response to renewed competition the Palisades Center will face in October when the old Nanuet Mall reopens as the open-air The Shops at Nanuet under the Simon Property Group, owners of the upscale The Westchester in White Plains.

"We recognize it is time for an update," the spokesperson tweeted.
