Dining at Roosevelt Field
Big, booming Roosevelt Field has taken gastronomy far beyond the food court. With its many offereings, the place may arguably be called Long Island's new restaurant row.
Here are 10 to try.

Skinny Pizza: This counter-service spinoff of the Roslyn Heights original specializes in thin-crust pies, available whole or by the slice, as well as low-calorie wraps and salads. The savory "shroom" pizza, with its whole-wheat crust, is a surprise winner. Calorie counts posted on everything allow for informed choices.
Skinny Pizza offers calorie-conscious pizzas such as this 16-inch, 8-slice skinny Margherita pie, with 190 calories per slice for a 16-inch pizza.

Chipotle: The national chain, known for its locavore sensibility, is situated on the main level across from Skinny Pizza. Here, you move along a line and select components of your burrito, taco (hard or sort corn), salad or bowl. Protein choices: spicy, dark-meat chicken; barbacoa (spicy, shredded beef braised with chipotle); and carnitas (highly seasoned seared and braised pork).
At Chipotle, you can order any of the burritos as bowls, including the carnitas (seasoned pork), with black beans and guacamole.

Havana Central: This big, bold, brassy eatery pays homage to the Havana before the revolution. You'll find knockout mojitos and a menu of such Latin specialties as empanadas, ropa vieja (shredded shirt steak with peppers and onions), garlicky-good shrimp mofongo and, of course, a Cuban sandwich.
Havana Central's refreshing shrimp seviche with citrus, avocado and red onions is served in a martini glass.

La Bottega: Brick-oven pizza, panini, entrees and salads are the main attractions at this 3-year-old branch of a burgeoning Long Island chain of authentic Italian eateries.

Bobby's Burger Palace: Iron Chef Bobby Flay's burgers are big and juicy -- and, best of all, done to requested temperature. There are turkey and vegetable burgers, too. Standouts include the signature crunch burger, with potato chips on the inside, hand-cut fries and an array of milk shakes and malteds, regular or spiked. Order at entry; your food will be brought to your counter seat.
Bobby's Burger Palace serves its Carolina burger with smoked American cheese, green onion slaw and a mustard barbecue sauce.

Houston's: In a dramatically dark space with a decor that evokes Frank Lloyd Wright, you'll find what may be the smokiest, most flavorsome vegetable burger going. The cheeseburger, Thai steak and noodle salad and rotisserie chicken are all are part of a well-edited, carefully executed American menu done with seasonal, well-sourced ingredients.

Seasons 52: A sophisticated setting and a seasonal New American repertoire of dishes racking up 500 calories or less is geared to the calorie-conscious. Consider a lemongrass salmon salad (460 calories), a chipotle shrimp flatbread (400 calories) and a mini indulgence dessert (300 calories or fewer). A well-conceived wine list and live piano music add to the allure.

The Capital Grille: This handsome link in a polished chain of high-end steak houses -- decorated with portraits of such American luminaries as Charles Lindbergh and Jacqueline Kennedy -- offers such culinary incentives as rich lobster and crabcakes, satisfying grilled swordfish and a first-rate bone-in, Kona coffee-crusted, dry-aged sirloin.

Grand Lux Cafe: In a sprawling faux-Venetian palace, the decibel level runs high, as does the overall esprit. Check out the daily changing lunch bento box or get a salad, sandwich or entree, such as miso-grilled salmon, followed by a house-made dessert. The apple pie is a standout. Worth the calories, as well, are banana pecan pancakes, one of several inventive selections at weekend brunch.

Sixth & Pine: This newly minted restaurant on the third floor of Nordstrom offers table service and varied seating options: counter, tables or upholstered booths. You can begin lunch or dinner with the moist and jalapeño cornbread served in an iron skillet, followed, perhaps, by the sprightly cilantro-lime chicken salad, a turkey Reuben sandwich or a roasted half chicken. Finish with warm apple cobbler a la mode, topped with fresh whipped cream and caramel sauce.
