Pastrami N Friends Kosher Restaurant-Deli
110A Commack Road Commack, NY 631-499-9537
Owner Don Henninger bought the restaurant in 1977, two years after it opened. He didn't grow up in a kosher home, but the dietary guidelines are clear and with rabbinical supervision, his doors have stayed open while as many as 18 other kosher restaurants in the area have failed, he said. In fact, the former owner was Italian. Perhaps it's longevity stems from the menu remaining kosher, but offerings have evolved to include lighter dishes for diet watchers. You can order the beef brisket with potato pancakes, applesauce and vegetables - a daily special for $13.95, or the Pastrami N Friends Super Special with pastrami, corned beef, french fries and stuffed derma, also $13.95. Over-stuffed combo meat sandwiches that have been menu staples since the place opened are available, but now there are offerings of lower-fat foods. Turkey and chicken wraps and salads are becoming as popular as the heavier fare, Henninger said. The restaurant seats 68 and doesn't accomodate private parties, but it does outside catering and a brisk take out business. A favorite to-go item: the grilled frankfurter. One plain, or loaded with mustard, sauerkraut, onions and relish, costs $2.60.Hours: Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Reservations: Accepted
