Our favorite sandwich shops
Bruce Gilbert
Sandwiches deserve as much respect as any other dish -- maybe more. Creating a great sandwich entails finding the proper bread and treating it correctly, filling it with just the right amount (or, perhaps, a little too much) of meats and/or vegetables, heightening the flavors with carefully considered condiments and serving the whole shebang with a collegial side dish. Here are some places that get it all right. --JOAN REMINICK

Cook's Scratch Kitchen & Bakery $ | Shopping, Restaurant, Breakfast, Lunch 1014 Fort Salonga Rd. East Northport Winners include the dueling Reubens -- the "traditionalist," made with corned beef, sauerkraut and melted Swiss grill-pressed on rye, versus the "hipster," done with house-cured smoked pork, Gruyère, stout mustard and fennel kraut on grilled sourdough -- and a chicken sandwich with moist, house-roasted chicken, house-pickled vegetables, sriracha aioli and fresh herbs tucked into a crusty baguette.
