Lunch at the News Stand Deli in Melville, a very attractive venue, with a decor that calls to mind the glory days of American newspapers. The wallpaper features old-time headlines, and large painted panels pay tribute to classic comic strips. One journalistic feature that really impressed me was the array of celebrity magazines available for any diner to peruse during her meal. I was with friends so this wasn’t necessary (or at least polite).
From the deli’s list of specialty heros, I could not resist ordering “The Newsday,” featuring ham, turkey, roast beef, American cheese, lettuce and tomato on a hero roll pictured above. It wasn’t great. What can I say? This is not my kind of sandwich. If it hadn’t borne the name of my employer, I wouldn’t have ordered it as it contained a number of ingredients (deli ham, turkey roll, deli roast beef, American cheese, iceberg lettuce, unripe tomatoes and a hero roll) that I usually avoid.
We also ordered a “Boston Globe” and this was much better: chicken cutlet, bacon, melted muenster, lettuce and tomato on a kaiser roll. Why couldn’t The Newsday have bacon on it?
My friend got a hot dish, chicken scampi. Oy. “Scampi” is actually a Mediterranean prawn and the Italian-American dish “shrimp scampi” originally referred to shrimp cooked the way they cook scampi in Italy. Now it has come to mean shrimp sauteed with garlic, lemon and parsley. This chicken was chunks of breast meat in a glutinous sauce that appeared to have been flavored with bottled Italian dressing.
