New gluten-free options at Long Island restaurants
The list of restaurants friendly to those who can't tolerate gluten keeps growing. Here are four of the newest additions.
ABEETZA NEXT DOOR, 82 Glen Cove Rd., Greenvale
Abeetza's chef-owner, Joseph DeLorenzo, offers a lush zucchini lasagna that's gluten free, since it substitutes zucchini for pasta. The vegetable is layered with a mix of goat cheese, ricotta and Parmigiano-Reggiano and topped with red sauce before it's baked. You also can get gluten-free personal pizzas and gluten-free pastas.
BBD'S -- BEERS BURGERS DESSERTS, 49 Rte. 25A Rocky Point
At this hip Rocky Point nexus for well-crafted burgers and craft beers, chef Ralph Perrazzo presents the option of a gluten-free bun, which works with beef burgers as well as his house-made falafel burger. Cheeseburger nachos are made with gluten-free corn chips.
THAT MEETBALL PLACE, 54 W. Main St., Patchogue
On the menu of this gastro pub specializing in all manner of meatballs are gluten-free chicken meatballs, seafood balls and a vegan ball made with rice, lentils and vegetables. Check out the daily specials for more gluten-free options.
MAGIC TACO CORP., 3321 Sunrise Hwy., Islip Terrace
Anything but your average taqueria, the quirky new spot is driven by two chefs: Steven Scalesse, the force behind Tulullah's in Bay Shore, and Devin Delgado, who cooked with Scalesse for years. Rice flour kimchee pancakes with pickled vegetables are colorful, piquant -- and gluten-free. Also good are crispy-fluffy banana pancakes, made with gluten-free rice flour, topped with bananas Foster jam.
