This summer, Long Island welcomes new two parlors into its ice-cream pantheon. Both "creameries" are a result of career changes by their proprietors, and both have quickly established themselves as gathering spaces in their respective communities.
Down in Rockville Centre, former lawyer (and Franklin Square native) Dan Levine named his month-old business after a song his parents used to sing: "Five Pennies" from the old Danny Kaye movie of the same name.
In addition to fine ice cream, Five Pennies Creamery turns out Coney Island custard (a rich, soft-serve ice cream made with eggs) and Italian fruit ices. This enables Levine and his friendly staff to create the Cyclone (after the roller coaster), in which the custard and ices are layered in a symphony of delectably cold sweetness.

When the mercury starts rising, so does the craving for ice cream. Newsday has complied a list of where to get ice cream on Long Island, highlighting this week's Feed Me video hot spot, Five Pennies Creamery.
