So many Long Islanders grew up eating wonton soup. The boiled dumplings, served in chicken broth, are usually stuffed with a ground pork mixture. They can be heavy or light, thin or thick-skinned. The more delicate, the better.
Here are four local favorites.
RED TIGER DUMPLING HOUSE, 1320 Stony Brook Rd., Stony Brook, 631-675-6899
You'd expect fine wontons at a place that calls itself a dumpling house, and Red Tiger doesn't let you down. While the place is more widely known for its soup dumplings (also called soup buns), the wonton soup shouldn't be overlooked. It's full of flavor and bobbing with sheer-skinned little dumplings. ($2.95 small; $3.95 large)
RUBY ASIAN FUSION & SUSHI BAR, 8285 Jericho Tpke. Woodbury, 516-224-4660
At this handsome fusion restaurant, wonton and watercress soup is afloat with delicate dimpled pork dumplings. ($4)
FANCY LEE ASIAN BISTRO 'N' SUSHI, 101 W. Main St., Babylon, 631-422-6505
Wontons in a savory broth rise above the heavy cliche, their thin skins overlaying flavorsome pork fillings. ($5)
RED GINGER ASIAN DINER, 353 Larkfield Rd., East Northport, 631-623-2125
You can't go wrong with the classic wonton soup featuring sheer little dumplings in a savory broth ($2.35 cup, $4.95 bowl). More of a meal is the large-size Westlake wonton soup, an egg-drop broth that also floats vegetables and shrimp.
