Gasho of Japan
356 Vanderbilt Motor Pkwy. Hauppauge, NY 631-231-3400
Housed in a replica of a medieval Japanese farmhouse, this restaurant (part of a metro area mini-chain) may look like a tranquil spot, but it is anything but. Step inside, and you'll hear the shouts of knife-wielding chefs as they fling steak, shrimp, vegetables and any number of ingredients on communal hibachi tables. The eating is punctuated by bursts of flames and applause.
There are drinks such as the "sneaky Tiki" and a few, non-hibachi dishes such as an appetizer of shrimp tempura and an entree of teriyaki salmon. A California roll is as close to sushi as the place gets.
The chain began in the early 1970s, making it one of the grandaddies of the current hibachi mania sweeping Long Island.Hours: Lunch, Monday to Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; dinner, Monday to Thursday, 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 5:30 to 11 p.m, Sunday, noon to 9:30 p.m. Reservations: Accepted Accessibility: Yes
