The Smithtown offshoot of Uncle Bacala’s in Garden City Park has closed. The place opened in 2011 but hadn’t really been making money, according to owner Peter Hewitson. “There are about 35 Italian restaurants within a mile or two,” he said, noting also that traffic problems and road construction had added to the restaurant’s woes.

Meanwhile, the original Uncle Bacala’s in Garden City Park is still up and running. Hewitson said that the place is currently featuring a special geared to night owls: On Monday to Thursday and on Sunday, anybody ordering after 9 p.m. gets a 25 percent food discount; the same holds true for those ordering after 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The place serves until 10 p.m. every night but Friday and Saturday, when it takes orders until 11 p.m.

Uncle Bacala’s is at 2370 Jericho Tpke., Garden City Park, 516-739-0505, unclebacala.com.
