Greenport: Mollusk madness this weekend

What do you get when you cross a celebration with local shellfish? Shellabration!

At least that's what Greenport is calling its bivalve bash. On Dec. 7 and 8, the town will be honoring the bounty of the Peconic Bay with its second annual Shellabration restaurant walk.

More than a dozen of the town’s best eateries — Biere, First and South, Lucharitos, Main, Noah’s, Salamander’s and Scrimshaw among them — will be participating, as well as local vineyards, breweries and specialty markets.

Here’s how it works: Order an “entrance wristband” online. Pick it up at the East End Maritime Museum located at the foot of Third Street, in the former railroad station adjacent to the Shelter Island Ferry dock.

Your wristband entitles you to the first tasting of the day — a free glass of Greenport Harbor Ale, and a raw bar tasting of Peconic Bay scallops, clams and oysters. You will also receive your official Shellabration tour map.

Next, you wander around Greenport, stopping at each of the participating restaurants where $5 will buy you tapas-sized dishes featuring scallops, oysters and clams. Glasses of local wine will be $3. The festivities end at 5 p.m., but if you partake on Saturday, your wristband entitles you to dig in again on Sunday.

Profits from wristband sales will benefit the Southold Project in Aquaculture Training (SPAT), a program to restore shellfish to local waters and increase community involvement in aquaculture, as well as the Greenport Rotary Club

One wristband is $15, two are $25, three are $37.50, four are $50.
