Restaurants with Thanksgiving turkey to go
This is for those who love everything about Thanksgiving at home — except cooking the big bird. Instead of going to a restaurant, let a restaurant take care of the turkey.
It’s crucial to order in advance. Then, pick up your turkey the day before (and in some cases, the day of) Thanksgiving. All that’s left is to follow reheating instructions and accept the compliments.
Here are four restaurants that put a twist on the turkey:
MARA'S HOMEMADE, 236 W. Jericho Tpke., Syosset, 516-682-9200, marashomemade.com
At this Southern and BBQ restaurant, chef-owner Mara Levi will be slow-smoking turducken — that’s a boneless chicken within a duck within a turkey, layered with andouille sausage and jalapeño cornbread stuffing. Get it uncooked for $105 or cooked for $165; about 15 pounds feeds at least 10. Also, Levi will be deep-frying turkeys injected with a Cajun marinade. Levi's infrared fryer doesn't use oil. It's $80 for a whole turkey, which also feeds around 10. You can also get soups, sides and desserts. Order by Nov. 20. Pickup is Nov. 27. before 9 p.m.
CHICHIMECAS, 169 Main St., Farmingdale, 516-586-8646, chichimecasrestaurant.com
At his Mexican restaurant, chef-owner Alejandro Gonzalez will be smoking turkeys that are rubbed with Mexican spices and, if you wish, stuffed with a chili nogada mixture of fruits, pork loin and filet mignon or served with mole poblano. An unstuffed 10 to 14 pound turkey is $38; with the chili nogada stuffing, it’s $68. (You can get a taste of the stuffing if you come into the restaurant and ask for it.). Order by Nov. 25; pickup is before 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28.
MAPLE TREE, 820 W. Main St., Riverhead, 631-727-2819, mapletreebbq.com
This BBQ spot-deli-caterer (in the midst of transforming into a restaurant) offers all kinds of mix- and- match options. Get a turkey whole or carved to order — and either roasted; brined and roasted; smoked and half smoked (dark meat)/ half roasted (breast) and then put together. You can get just the turkey with gravy at $5.50 a pound, or else an entire turkey dinner at $10 a pound (for the bird) accompanied by stuffing, turnips, gravy, cranberry sauce, vegetables and dinner rolls. Order by Nov. 22. Pickup by 2 p.m. on Nov. 28..
FAMOUS DAVE'S BAR-B-QUE, 716 Smithtown Bypass, Smithtown, 631-360-6490 and 1060 Corporate Dr, Westbury, 516-832-7300, famousdaves.com
At this BBQ chain, a 12- to 14 -ound cherrywood-smoked spice-rubbed turkey goes for $44.99. You can also get it with all the sides and trimmings for $109, a meal that feeds 8 to 10. Order by Nov. 24, pickup by Nov. 27.
