Portuguese deli in Baldwin Harbor
What methods does a professional food writer employ to discover new and exciting places to eat? She works her sources, scours social media, fields tips from readers and colleagues. Nothing, however, beats driving aimlessly around Long Island, eyes peeled for chow.
Which is how I came upon Mike’s Portuguese Chicken & Deli in Baldwin Harbor, which opened about two months ago.
The specialty here is roast chicken Portuguese style, moist and savory and served with a kicky little pink sauce, yellow rice, house-made potato chips and a forgettable salad ($19.95 for a whole bird with all the trimmings). There are many other Portuguese specialties; we sampled and enjoyed chunks of roast pork and flaky empanadas.
The little storefront, which has a few tables for dining in, also has a full range of American deli offerings: sandwiches, wraps, burgers and salads. But I'm planning a return to explore the Portuguese sausage, roast goat and codfish cakes.
Mike’s Portuguese Chicken & Deli is at 930 Atlantic Ave., Baldwin Harbor, 516-379-0044.
