Port Washington: Souper Bowl Saturday
As Super Bowl Sunday draws near, so does Souper Bowl Saturday, that annual celebration of soup sponsored by the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce.
Souper Bowl VI, played on Feb. 2, will feature the soup stylings of 17 local establishments including Ayhan’s (Fish Kebab and Shish Kebab and Mediterranean Marketplace), Main Street Bakery, Pepe Rosso and Toscanini.
Adults pay $7 (kids under 12, $3) for a tasting spoon and a ballot. Use the former to sample 2-ounce portions of soup, the latter to vote for your favorite. In addition to the People’s Choice, a Judge’s Choice will be awarded by a panel of experts, including actor Burt Young (best known for playing Sylvester Stallone’s brother-in-law Paulie in “Rocky”) and Christine Sanchez, Bobby Flay’s sous chef.
At last year’s Souper Bowl, the judges awarded their blue ribbon to the now-defunct Innuendo for its logmahn soup; the People’s Choice Award went to the potato-leek soup from the Amsterdam at Harborside, a life-care residential community. Sullivan’s Quay got the silver from both the judges and the people for its mulligatawny.
The battle is joined from noon to 3 p.m. at Fellowship Hall in the United Methodist Church, 35 Middle Neck Rd., Port Washington. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Twin Pines Consumers Food Pantry. The event will also include a food drive, so please bring nonperishable food items to donate.
