Oktoberfest dining and drinking
Oktoberfest begins tomorrow in Munich. On Long Island, it's already here.
Head to Pumpernickels in Northport and Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square for a taste of German cuisine, one that's not available at many restaurants in Nassau and Suffolk.
At Pumpernickels, consider the herring, headcheese vinaigrette, pig's knuckle with sauerkraut, sauerbraten with potato dumplings, and the Bavarian platter, starring a smoked pork chop, bratwurst and mashed potatoes.
At Plattduetsche Park, try the imported pretzel with mustard; Bavarian potato soup with bacon; the pork shank with mashed potatoes and sauerkraut; rindsrouladen, or beef stuffed with bacon, carrot, celery and onion in red-wine gravy; and loin of pork.
There will be plenty of good beer to go with the food.
