New York City was the big winner at last night's James Beard culinary awards. Most of the most important awards went to local restaurants and chefs including Mario Batali, Wylie Dufresne and David Chang.

The annual award ceremony, sponsored by New York-based non-profit James Beard Foundation, took place at Avery Fisher Hall and was hosted by actor Oliver Platt.

Chefs from all over the country were recognized by 10 regional awards. The New York City winner was Wylie Dufresne, whose restaurant wd~50 was a trailblazer in modernist cuisine. Long Island is grouped with New England in the Northeast region, whose winner was Melissa Kelly of Primo In Rockland, Maine. (Gerry Hayden of North Fork Table and Inn in Southold was a finalist in this category.)

Among the national awards collected by the Big Apple: Outstanding Service went to Del Posto, the formal Italian restaurant in the Meatpacking District owned by Mario Batali and Joseph and Lidia Bastianich; Maguy Le Coze, founder and co-owner of Le Bernardin in midtown was named Outstanding Restaurateur; Blue Hill in the Village was named Outstanding Restaurant.

Rising Star Chef went to Danny Bowien, who this year opened a Brooklyn branch of his innovative San Francisco restaurant Mission Chinese.

There was a tie for Outstanding Chef: New York’s David Chang (Momofuku Noodle Bar, Momofuku Ssäm Bar, Momofuku Ko, Ma Peche) and Chicago’s Paul Kahan, who owns Blackbird.
