Fire at Cliff’s Rendezvous in Riverhead
Cliff’s Rendezvous, Riverhead’s venerable steakhouse-bar, is recovering from a grease fire that occurred in the kitchen last Tuesday. “As far as fires go, it was minimal,” said manager Robert Cormier. “The dining room is fine, the appliances are fine. The biggest problem is that the fire department had to chop a hole in the roof.”
Cormier said that since the restaurant had been open “seven days a week, 12 or 13 hours a day for almost 40 years,” the temporary closure presented an opportunity to “spiff up the place.”
Cormier was also mindful that the fire at Cliff’s was far less ruinous than the one that destroyed Riverhead’s Athens Grill on Friday evening. “What we had was a little fender bender in the parking lot. They had a 60-mile-an-hour crash.”
Cormier said that he hopes that Cliff’s Rendezvous will reopen in the next few weeks. In the meantime, he said, anyone hungry for the restaurant’s signature marinated steak can visit Cliff's Elbow Room (1549 Main Rd., Jamesport, 631-722-3292) or Cliff's Elbow Too (1085 Franklinville Rd., Laurel, 631-298-3262.)
Cliff’s Rendezvous is at 313 East Main St., Riverhead, 631-727-6880.
