Favorite breakfast restaurants on Long Island
Individuality, coupled with a respect for simplicity and tradition, is what keeps a breakfast spot percolating. That's certainly true of these restaurants, which have the right ingredients to rank as top-of-the-morning kinds of places. All eateries taste-tested by Joan Reminick.

It's the eggs, fritattas, omelets and corned beef hash all served in a skillet that sets Thomas' Ham & Eggery Diner in Carle Place apart from all other diners on Long Island, and that certainly includes scrambles (pictured). Thomas's also has specialty pancakes and stuffed French toast; at the counter you will find a daily array of freshly baked muffins.

At the gleaming Premier Diner in Commack, co-owner Helen Georgatos offers a regularly changing menu insert that showcases her imaginative thinking. Proof comes via clever pancakes, including pistachio (pictured) and cloudlike angel food. Baked oatmeal is also good, and the omelets are light yet substantial.

At Relish in Kings Park, produce, much of it locally sourced, is noted on a chalkboard. The "new school" egg sandwich with house-made maple turkey sausage, tomato, Swiss and spinach (pictured) gets an A, as do the ricotta pancakes with fresh berries, Mexicali omelet with chorizo and whole-grain cereal.

Recalling the diner experience of yesteryear, Sweet Mama's in Northport is a '50s-themed eatery serves up multigrain, granola-crusted French toast (pictured). The breakfast choices also involve standards as well as some very modern wraps.

Over-the-top comfort fare is what Crazy Beans in Stony Brook does best. A cheerful cash-only spinoff of a Miller Place cafe, you'll do well with a dish called cheesy biscuits: flaky Cheddar biscuits crowned with soft scrambled eggs and a savory gravy speckled with bits of sausage. And definitely grab a raisin scone.

There always seems to be something new coming out of the kitchen at Toast and Co. in Huntington. A recent add, signature egg scrambles, includes the lava skillet (pictured), Tabasco-spiked eggs with herbs, jalapeño chorizo and sweet potatoes. With separate menu sections just for French toast and eggs Benedict, you're never out of options here.

The charming, all-American Jo Jo Apples Cafe in Point Lookout impresses with its clean-tasting, airy-textured, fruit-studded pancakes (including strawberry, pictured). Or try the excellent farmer's frittata with ham, sausage, potato, tomato and cheese; also good is the spicy corn frittata.

A favorite on the breakfast menu at Brownstones in Amityville is the "as the Romans do," eggs baked with diced potatoes, prosciutto, fresh basil and shaved Parmesan.

At the old-fashioned Munday's in Huntington, which sports wooden booths, the offerings change daily. Breakfast specialties have included Nutella-and-banana-stuffed challah French toast served with walnuts and caramel sauce (pictured), a Mexican frittata and peach pancakes.

A bed and breakfast vibe and an imaginative repertoire define Morning Rose Cafe in Bellmore, a charming little cafe where executive chef Roberto Baez puts no end of panache into hisirresistible Voodoo berry lemon pancakes (pictured); flaky Bubba biscuits topped with sausage gravy, eggs, roasted tomatoes and house-made maple-pork sausage patties; and flavorful, hot chilaquiles.

The cute, quirky Maureen & Daughters Kitchen in Smithtown has garnered the attention of diners and food fans from Montauk to Manhattan. You'll find large portion egg dishes (the sausage, apple and cheddar cheese omelette is pictured), stuffed raspberry French toast, superior pancakes and baked oatmeal that's a virtual hot oatmeal cookie-in-a-bowl. A fixture since the late 1940s, Glen's Dinette in Babylon offers all the classic tastes of the morning, including French toast (pictured).

Another Amityville go-to, Cornucopia's Noshery sports an attractive, sun-splashed space with a counter and tables, where you'll want to order the signature corn cakes (pictured), which are evocative of a corn muffin. Also good: oat-and-raisin scones and the Margherita omelet, made with organic eggs, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil.

The name is accurate: Cook's Scratch Kitchen & Bakery in East Northport makes just about everything from scratch. Jump-start your morning with pancakes topped with mixed fruit (pictured), waffles studded with pecans or an egg and Cheddar sandwich on a flaky house-made biscuit.

Inside the Allergria Hotel, Atlantica in Long Beach offers great views of the waves from a sharp dining room where glass doors touch the boardwalk. But we like the breakfasts, too, including buttermilk pancakes (pictured) served with pure maple syrup.

A country vibe prevails at the quaint Park Avenue Grill in Amityville with plenty of organic offerings. Organic pancakes studded with mixed berries (pictured) are wholesome and light and rank among the best on LI. Also satisfying is an organic Spanish omelet with chorizo, bell peppers, jalapenos, Monterey Jack cheese and sauteed onion.
