Christiano's
19 Ira Road Syosset, NY 516-921-5588
Christiano's is said to be the restaurant in which Billy Joel set his epic song "Italian Restaurant" and since 1958 it has been offering diners bottles of red, bottles of white to all comers. The main dining room, done up in wood panelling and red upholstery, is a classic and the menu matches it perfectly: garlic bread, Caesar salad, baked clams, your choice of pasta with your choice of sauce, and all the parmigianos, marsalas, piccatas, franceses, oreganatas and marinaras you could wish for. Baked pasta casseroles are particularly good. As if pop-song immortality weren't enough, Christiano's claims to be the home of both "the world's finest pizza" and "the original stuffed garlic knot." In fact, the pie is an excellent example of old-school, thin-crust New York pizza.
