Long Island has a new crop of burger places, each putting its own spin on the classic ground beef patty on a bun. Here are four hot- off-the-grill spots.

DIRTYBURGER, 12 Manetto Hill Rd., Plainview, 516-595-7399

At this bright Plainview newcomer, chef-owner Ian Russo uses a cayenne-fueled mix of spices to "dirty" up his burgers, which he then caramelizes with a bit of honey. In addition to beef, there are dirty turkey, lamb and veggie burgers. Great freshly made fries.

BAREBURGER, 32 Middle Neck Rd., Great Neck, 516-441-5711

At this all-natural burger chain, a complex, ambitious menu features burgers that range from grass-fed beef to bison to boar to ostrich, everything sustainably raised. You can build your own burger or choose from set options. Hand-cut fries and organic milk shakes, too.

BBD'S -- BEERS BURGERS DESSERTS, 49 Rte. 25A, Rocky Point, 631-849-1620

At his hip beer and burger place, chef-owner Ralph Perrazzo offers three styles of beef burgers -- a 12-ounce wood-and-charcoal-grilled patty, a griddle-cooked quarter pounder or a burger steamed over onions. For vegetarians, there's a winning falafel burger. Hand-cut fries and fine shakes to order.

ZINBURGER WINE & BURGER BAR, 160 Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station, 631-271-3891

Order a side of zucchini fries, which are hot, crisp, Parmesan-dusted and irresistible at the boutique-style new burger spot at the amped-up Walt Whitman Shops. Burgers come on tall, soft, shiny-topped brioche buns that squish down easily when bitten, with options including a simply topped Kobe beef and breakfast burger with bacon, egg, avocado and American cheese.
