One bite of a classic bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich unleashes a flood of sensations: Hot, cool, salty, sweet, crunchy and -- thanks to a slather of mayo -- creamy.
While BLTs proliferate on Long Island, great examples aren't so easy to come by. To save you the indignity of flabby bacon, wet lettuce, pale tomatoes and Miracle Whip on toasted focaccia, we give you these favorites:
DUGAN'S SANDWICH SHOP, Woodbury
The house-baked bread at this long-standing sandwich shop gives its BLT an edge. The big slabs of toast are fragrant and nutty-sweet, spread with Hellmann's mayonnaise and piled with bacon, shredded iceberg, vine-ripened tomatoes.
8027 Jericho Tpke., 516-921-1182
Probably the costliest BLT on Long Island, the sandwich at this luxe lunch spot is made with chargrilled Tuscan bread, a mountain of bacon, bright romaine and sweet crimson tomatoes from nearby Schmidt's Market. It's finished with Hellmann's Extra Heavy Mayonnaise and chopped parsley.
15 Main St., 631-283-6443
NORTHPORT SWEET SHOP, Northport
At this old-fashioned ice-cream parlor, bacon is paired with very good tomatoes (homegrown in season), iceberg lettuce and Hellmann's mayo to make a sandwich that goes beyond by virtue of first being buttered on the outside, then toasted on the grill.
55 Main St., 631-261-3748
HIGHWAY DINER & BAR, Wainscott
This being East Hampton, the Highway does meet diner criteria, yet veers from the cliché (with spiced crabcakes, andouille gumbo and more). Among the winners is a BLT made with thick bacon, bright tomatoes and romaine on toasted white sourdough.
