CSAs on Long Island
Long Islanders looking to eat locally as well as healthfully can satisfy both cravings by joining a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm. Through a CSA, farmers presell shares of their coming crop. Members receive weekly distributions of vegetables, and, in some cases, fruit, eggs, flowers and honey.
While all the CSAs are enticing, you'll want to consider cost, distribution locations and days of the week produce is delivered as well as what is on the menu. While fresh, same-day-picked produce is tempting, driving an hour to get it every week may not be.
And, be sure to check with the farmer to see what additional offerings, or add-ons, are available. You may be pleasantly surprised to learn that organic, grass-fed beef and lamb, as well as farm-canned goods, can be had for an extra fee. Some farmers even offer discounts for those willing to get their hands dirty pulling weeds or taking part in a morning harvest.
