When it comes to Community Supported Agriculture, most Long Islanders understand the concept of consumers buying a share of a farm’s produce during the preseason and receiving boxes of vegetables weekly throughout the growing season. CSAs have been on Long Island since the concept was introduced about 20 years ago.

How much you get in a share depends on how good the growing season is. Some CSAs require members to work either on the farm or at the pickup site. And, those who aren’t certified organic usually follow organic, sustainable-agriculture or biodynamic practices.

If you decide to join a CSA, you’ll want to apply for a spot quickly — space often sells out months before the growing season begins. Here’s a rundown of programs. -- Sylvia E. King-Cohen
