Weekend family fun on Long Island: 'Dorothy Meets Alice,' 'Peter Pan,' animal adventures and more
Looking for things to do with the kids this weekend? From bears and trouts to live performances featuring classic characters, there's so much to do on Long Island. Here are my top five picks for family-friendly activities this weekend:
All About Bears at Quogue Wildlife Refuge (3 Old Country Rd., Quogue). Learn about black, grizzly and polar bears from naturalist Teepee Ted of the Wilderness Traveling Museum in Riverhead. Families with kids ages 5-12 will touch bear skins and bones, play a bone game and color a bear necklace on Saturday at 1 p.m. Price: $5; reservations are required.
Dorothy Meets Alice: The Wizard of Wonderland at Studio Theatre (141 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst). On Saturday at 2 p.m., kids can watch a live performance and mash-up of two kid-friendly classics. Price: $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
Create an Ocean of Motion at Maritime Explorium (101 E. Broadway, Port Jefferson). On Saturday and Sunday from 1-5 p.m., use everyday items and chemistry to set things in motion and find out how to make a lava lamp-like bottle. Price: $5.
Peter Pan and Wendy at BroadHollow's BayWay Arts Center (265 E. Main St., East Islip). A live performance of the tale of a boy who didn't want to grow up on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at noon. Price: $10 in advance, $12 at the door.
Trout Birthday Party at Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium (1660 Rte. 25A, Cold Spring Harbor). On Sunday at 2 p.m., celebrate the birth of baby trouts with cake and songs. Price: Free with museum admission ($6 adults, $4 children ages 3-12, $4 seniors, free for toddlers 2 and younger).
