Weekend family fun on Long Island: 'Little Mermaid,' ice cream and more
Looking for things to do with the kids this weekend? From the "Little Mermaid" and "The Goonies" to ice cream and more, there is plenty happening on Long Island. Here are my top five picks for family-friendly activities during the weekend:
Explore the Science of Ice Cream at Maritime Explorium (101 E. Broadway, Port Jefferson). Children can explore the physics of phase transitions while making their own batches of ice cream on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m. Ice cream batches will be made at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before the ice cream-making time you would like to attend. Price: $5.
Film Screening: "The Goonies" at Mulford Farm (10 James Lane, East Hampton). Enjoy an outdoor viewing of this adventure comedy; rated PG, on Friday at 8:30 p.m. Rain date is Aug. 11. Price: $5, free for ages 5 and younger.
"The Little Mermaid" at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City). Based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, a young mermaid is willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul and the love of a human prince; on Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Price: $12.
Birds of a Feather Flock Together at Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge (340 Smith Rd., Shirley). Kids in grades 1 to 5 can learn about feathers. Find out what they’re made of, how they grow and how they work, as well as a feather craft; reservations required on Saturday, at 11 a.m. Price: Free.
Long Island Karting Association at Nassau Coliseum (1255 Hempstead Tpke., Uniondale). This family-oriented racing sport is run by the Long Island Karting Association's board of volunteers and many members of the club. Held in parking lot 8 on on Sunday, from 8 a.m.to 5 p.m. Price: $5.
