Put on rubber boots and old clothes and head to the Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank on Saturday to jump in mud puddles, make mud pies and march in a rubber-boot parade during the farm's celebration of International Mud Day.

"It's an event to get the kids outside to celebrate the Earth and mud and the beginning of summer," says Lina Ospina, the farm's office manager. Though International Mud Day is actually Sunday, the farm is celebrating a day early.

The dirt at the farm lends itself to creating big mud puddles perfect for splashing in, and the farm's outdoor classroom becomes a mud kitchen, Ospina says, with kiddie pools filled with mud for the kids to use to create mud pies, mud bread loaves and mud sculptures.

At about noon, some of the farm animals -- perhaps sheep, horses, goats and cows -- will join participants in a rubber boot parade around the grounds. A tractor-pulled wagon ride is an additional $2 a person, and it's also $2 for a bag of feed to offer to the animals.

International Mud Day, which began in 2011, encourages splashing, rolling, squishing and sliding in mud, according to the event website at WorldForumFoundation.org. In addition to the United States, the day is celebrated in countries such as Nepal and Australia.

The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Price: $2 a person, includes a visit to the Butterfly House. For more information, call 631-852-4600 or visit ccesuffolk.org.
