Mother's Day crafts: Terrariums
Terrariums are a fun, easy project for children and adults alike, and they make the perfect Mother's Day gift. Here, a step-by-step guide to creating a terrarium from Hicks Nurseries in Westbury.
Step 1: Gather what you'll need
-A clear container with a top
- Small pebbles
- Potting soil
- A spoon for planting.
- Plants -- The number of plants depends on the size of the container. There are many plants you can use, including small ferns, croton, pothos, African violets, coleus and mini orchids to name a few.
Step 2: Clean your container
Wash your container with soapy water, rinse clean and let it dry.
Step 3: Add pebbles
Fill the bottom of the container with pebbles for drainage.
Step 4: Add the soil
You’ll want to fill about a quarter of the container with soil. Moisten the soil before adding it to the container by misting it with a water bottle. This makes it easier to manage and creates less dust.
Step 5: Dig
Using a spoon, dig a small hole in the soil for each plant. Make sure your plants do not touch each other or the sides of the container. If you cannot easily reach into the container, try using a chopstick instead.
Step 6: Decorate
Add fun little accents to your container to give it some personality. Ideas include miniature figurines like garden gnomes, painted stones – its up to you! If you used a canning jar, you can add a piece of fabric to the lid or paint it a bright fun color.
Step 7: Watch it grow
Place your terrarium in a location that receives plenty of indirect sunlight. Mist it weekly with water.
