Kid volunteers can win $10,000 in scholarships
Do you know a teen who is a superb volunteer in your community? He or she could win a $10,000 scholarship through the Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes program or the 2013 Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program.
Both programs are currently accepting nominations. Build-A-Bear’s nominations are due by Feb. 28; Kohl's are due by March 15.
The Build-A-Bear program is in its 10th year; kids ages 8 to 18 are eligible. Ten “Huggable Heroes” will each receive $10,000, which includes an educational scholarship, a donation to a charity of their choice and a mentoring scholarship to help them with their charitable entrepreneurship. The Huggable Heroes will also receive a trip to St. Louis, Mo., home of Build-A-Bear Workshop World Bearquarters.
The Kohl’s program is in its 13th year. Kids ages 6 to 18 are eligible; nominations are being accepted through March 15 at kohlskids.com; nominators must be 21 years or older.
While the biggest Kohl's prizes are $10,000 each, more than 2,300 kids will be honored with a total of $425,000 in scholarship money and prizes. Two nominees from each of the more than 1,100 Kohl’s stores nationwide will win a $50 Kohl’s gift card, and more than 200 will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward post-secondary education. Ten national winners will be awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships for post-secondary education, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on behalf of each national winner.
Last year, for instance, Kohl’s honored Brianna Moore, 15, of Detroit, who collected food and decorated and delivered baskets that fed more than 400 families. She also collected hats and gloves for more than 300 local schoolchildren.
