Free (or cheap!) for kids on Long Island in December
Need weekend plans or something to do with the kids during the week? There are a ton of free children's events at local libraries, but we also found free and cheap things to do elsewhere this month. Whether you have one, two, three or more kids in tow, here's a roundup of fun, budget-friendly events in December.
Christmas at the Lighthouse at Montauk Point Lighthouse (2000 Montauk Hwy., Montuak) on Sunday, Dec. 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. See the annual lighting of the Montauk Lighthouse, with a special appearance by Santa.
Christmas Tree Lighting at Brookhaven Town Hall (One Independence Hall, Farmingville) on Friday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. Come early to hear music, followed by the tree lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. Please bring a new wrapped toy.
Rainbow Loom Demonstration and Contest at The Toy Store at Jack's (188 North Ferry Rd., Shelter Island Heights) on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. Kids can learn how to make Rainbow Loom jewelry and bring their own creations to enter in a contest. Open to kids ages 5 to 15.
Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting in West Babylon on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. The parade will begin at the corner of Little East Neck Road and Third Street, ending at Vermont Avenue for the tree lighting ceremony. Free hot chocolate and cookies will be served and kids can take pictures with Santa.
Visit With Santa at The Toy Store at Jack's (188 North Ferry Rd., Shelter Island Heights) on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. Kids ages 2 to 10 can meet and take photos with Santa. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served.
Holiday Parade of Lights in Center Moriches on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. The parade will run along Main Street, starting at Montauk Highway and Lake Avenue. Members of the Center Moriches Post Office will be there to collect letters to Santa, who will arrive at the end of the parade.
Holiday Light Show at Camp Edey (1500 Lakeview Ave., Bayport) starting Monday, Dec. 2 through Monday, Dec. 30 from 5 to 9 p.m. Drive through a mile-long wooded trail filled with light displays. Kids can also take pictures with Santa. Price: $12 per car Monday through Thursday, $15 per car Friday through Sunday.
Animation Celebration at Long Island Science Center on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children can explore the world of computerized and traditional animation and make characters of their own. Price: $5
Second Saturdays at Hofstra University Museum Emily Lowe Gallery (Hempstead Tpke., Hempstead) on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Kids can explore Japanese art scrolls and then create their own. Appropriate for kids age 4 to 10. Price: $5
