Need weekend plans or something to do with the kids during the week? There are a ton of free children's events at local libraries, but we also found free and cheap ($5 or less) things to do elsewhere this month. Whether you have one, two, three or more kids in tow, here's a roundup of fun, budget-friendly events in February.

Free

Nature Tales at Seatuck Environmental Association (550 South Bay Ave., Islip) on Friday, Feb. 8 and Feb. 22 from 2-2:30 p.m. Jane Lewis teaches children ages 1-5 (along with a caregiver) about the natural world through books.

WinterFest at Levittown Hall (201 Levittown Pkwy., Hicksville) on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Enjoy family-friendly games, crafts, entertainment and more.

Junior Rangers Workshop: Discovering Wilderness Animals at the Fire Island National Seashore on Saturday, Feb. 23 from noon-1 p.m. Children ages 8-12 can search for signs of wildlife and create an animal tracks craft to take home. Be sure to dress for the weather and get ready to walk.

Open Studio Arts and Crafts for Kids at Guild Hall (158 Main St., East Hampton) on Saturdays from noon-5 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. Budding young artists (ages 4-10) can enjoy free do-it-yourself crafts in the Boots Lamb Education Center.

The Hofstra University Museum's Sculpture Exploration Backpack at Emily Lowe Gallery (Hempstead Turnpike, Hempstead) on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-5 p.m., Tues.-Fri. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Children ages 4-9 with an adult can explore the outdoor sculpture collection. Pick up a backpack at the Emily Lowe Gallery before venturing out. Each child will receive a small gift from the museum after the returning the backpack at the end of the tour.

Celebrate Groundhog Day at Maritime Explorium (101 East Broadway, Port Jefferson) on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 1-5 p.m. Create shadow puppets to commemorate Groundhog Day. Price: $5.

Beaded Pouch Craft at Garvies Point Museum and Preserve (50 Barry Dr., Glen Cove) on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Design a pouch with glass beads followed a viewing of "Paddle to the Sea." Price: $3, $2 children 5-12 (plus a $5 craft fee)

Valentine's Day Heartfelt Messages at Maritime Explorium (101 East Broadway, Port Jefferson) on Saturday, Feb. 9 and Sunday, Feb. 10 from 1-5 p.m. Create a nautical Valentine to make a message in a bottle. Price: $5.

Great Grandma's Kitchen at Connetquot River State Park Preserve (Sunrise Highway, Oakdale) on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 2-4 p.m. Discover a kitchen from the 1800s and learn about different cooking techniques with hands-on demonstrations using gadgets like swizzle sticks and cherry stoners. Price: $4, $3 children ages 3 and up; reservations are required.

President's Day Film and Fun at Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum (301 Main St., Cold Spring Harbor) on Monday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. Children are invited to watch the animated film "Ponyo" and create a sparkly fish craft. Snacks will be served. Price: $5 children ages 5-12.

Arrowhead Necklace Craft at Garvies Point Museum and Preserve (50 Barry Dr., Glen Cove) on Thursday, Feb. 21 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Watch the film "Iroquois Indians of North America" and design an arrowhead necklace using handmade clay beads. Price: $3, $2 children 5-12 (plus a $5 craft fee).

Fearsome Jaws of Dinosaurs at Caleb Smith Park Preserve (Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown) on Feb. 22 from 10-11:30 a.m. Learn about these large creatures and make a fossil craft. Price: $4, $3 children 3 and up; reservations are required.

Constructing with Crystals at Maritime Explorium (101 East Broadway, Port Jefferson) on Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24 from 1-5 p.m. Use sugar cubes to build an ice house. Price: $5.

Celestial Celebration at Long Island Science Center (11 W. Main St., Riverhead) on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Learn about the solar system, enjoy space-themed activities and create a moon chart. Price: $5.
