Free (and cheap!) for kids on Long Island in April
Need weekend plans or something to do with the kids during the week? There are a ton of free children's events at local libraries, but we also found free and cheap ($5 or less) things to do elsewhere this month. Whether you have one, two, three or more kids in tow, here's a roundup of fun, budget-friendly events in April.
Storytime at Downs Farm Preserve (County Route 25, Cutchogue) on Thursday, April 11 at 1 p.m. Children ages 2-5 can create a seasonal craft and listen to a nature-themed story; reservations are required.
National Junior Ranger Day at Fire Island Wilderness Site (Mastic Beach) on Saturday, April 20 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Enjoy a photo walk workshop, learn how to track animals followed by a beach hike. Be sure to bring a camera, water and a bag lunch. Recommended for children ages 5-15.
Our Feathered Friends: Disovering Birds for Children at Bailey Arboretum (195 Bayville Road and Feeks Lane, Lattingtown) on Sunday, April 28 at 10:30 a.m. Create a bird craft and learn about different species of birds on Long Island.
Dinosaur Dimensions at Long Island Science Center (11 W. Main St., Riverhead) on Saturday, April 13 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Kids and adults alike can participate in dino-themed crafts and activities. Price: $5.
Family Adventures: Let's Hear it for the Ears at Caleb Smith Park Preserve (Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown). On Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m. Play sound games, make a craft and learn facts about ears. Price: $4, $3 children (under 3 are free).
Insect Invasion at Long Island Science Center (11 W. Main St., Riverhead) on Saturday, April 27 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Learn about six-legged insects, enjoy crafts and activities, and even hold hissing cockroaches. Price: $5.
All Kids Fair at Melville Marriott (1350 Old Walt Whitman Rd., Melville) on Sunday, April 28 from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Local kids and parents can participate in classes, crafts, face painting, balloon animals, nutritional screening and more. Free baby-sitting with admission. Price: $5, free ages 2 and under.
