Family-friendly performances on Long Island in May
Children love watching their favorite characters come to life on stage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout May to help you plan a fun-filled day.
The Little Princess at Studio Theatre (141 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst) on Saturdays in May at 2 p.m. This musical adaptation of the classic by Frances Hodgson Burnett follows Sara Crewe, a heiress to a large fortune whose life takes a dramatic turn when she receives news of the loss of her father, and her fortune. Price: $12 ($10 in advance).
Alice in Wonderland at John W. Engeman Theater (250 Main St., Northport) on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Join Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum as they explore a fantasy world. Price: $15.
Treasure Island at Carriage House Theater, Vanderbilt Mansion (180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport) on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m. Follow the adventures of young Jamie and his crew of pirates (which will be chosen from the audience). Price: $10, $8, children under 3 are free.
High School Musical 2 at Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College (305 N. Service Rd., Dix Hills) on Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Sunday, May 5 at noon and 3 p.m. Adapted from the original Disney movie, two high school juniors from opposing cliques resist peer pressure and rivalry. Price: $10.
The Golden Global Drum at Hofstra University Museum: Emily Lowe Gallery (Hempstead Turnpike, Hempstead) on Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m. An interactive performance of music around the world that links drumming to different cultures through story and song. Price: $5 family of 4, $1 per additional attendee.
Princess Tea Party at Ballet Long Island (1863 Pond Rd., Ronkonkoma) on Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m. Join Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid for a tea party performance. Price: $19, $32 for two guests.
Rapunzel at BroadHollow Theatre Company (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont) on Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. Kids and adults alike can watch this German fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm come to live on stage. Price: $12 ($10 in advance).
Acrobats of Cirque-tacular at Staller Center for the Arts Stony Brook (Stony Brook University, Nicolls Road) on Sunday, May 5 at 4 p.m. Watch as aerialists, acrobats, contortionists, jugglers, illusionists and more take center stage under the circus tent. Price: $15.
Popovich Comedy Pet Theater at NYCB Theatre at Westbury (960 Brush Hollow Rd., Westbury) on Saturday, May 5 at 1 p.m. This family-friendly performance includes juggling acts and stunts featuring 15 cats and 10 dogs who were rescued from animal shelters. Price: $29.50.
Martha Speaks at Bay Street Theatre (Main Street, Sag Harbor) on Saturday, May 11 at 11 a.m. Based on books by Susan Meddaugh and on the PBS Kids television show, Martha the dog eats alphabet soup and is given the power of speech. Price: $15.
The Enchanted Sleeping Beauty at Take-One Performing Arts Academy (1021 Portion Rd., Farmingville) on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5 at 1 p.m. and Saturday, May 11 at 1 p.m. Kids and adults alike will enjoy a children's production of this classic fairy tale. Price: $11.
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center (Westhampton Beach) on Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m. and noon. Alexander T. Wolf is on trial for the murder of two of the three little pigs. Find out what happens when this classic children's book comes to life on stage. Price: $10-$12.
Aladdin and the Lamp, or It's All in the Giving at Theatre Three (412 main St., Port Jefferson) on Saturday, May 25 at 11 a.m. Follow Aladdin as he teams up with an outrageous genie to win the hand of beautiful Princess Jasmine. Price: $10.
Seussical The Musical at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center (76 Main St., Westhampton Beach) on Saturday, May 25 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. A musical based on the characters and stories of Dr. Seuss including "The Cat in the Hat" and "Horton Hears a Who." Price: $15-$25.
