Family-friendly performances on Long Island in March
Children love watching their favorite characters come to life on stage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout March to help you plan a fun-filled day.
"Pinocchio" at Carriage House Theatre, Vanderbilt Mansion (180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport) every Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. A classic tale about a young puppet who wants more than anything to be a real boy. Price: $10 adults, $8 children ages 3 and older.
Three Little Pigs Out West at Studio Theatre (141 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst) on Saturday, March 2, 9 and 16, at 2 p.m. The famous little pigs head out west to Baby Bear's Dude Ranch for a vacation -- that is before the Big Bad Wolf and his cousin show up. Price: $10.
"Freckleface Strawberry" at CM Performing Arts Center (931 Montauk Hwy., Oakdale) on Saturday, March 2, and Saturday, March 3 at 2 p.m. Enjoy a musical based on Julianne Moore's children's book of the same name, in which a girl with bright, red hair and freckles learns to accept herself. Price: $10.
Aesop Bops! With David Gonzalez and The Yak Yak Band at Landmark on Main Street (232 Main St., Port Washington) on Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. Audience participation is expected in this funny musical performance featuring Aesop's classics such as "The Lion and the Mouse," "The Fisherman and His Wife" and "The Turtle's Shell." Price: $20.
Strawberry Shortcake: Follow Your Berry Own Beat at NYCB Theatre (960 Brush Hollow Rd., Westbury) on Sunday, March 10, at 1 p.m. Strawberry Shortcake takes the stage along with her pals the Doodlepops. Price: $19.50 and up.
Tap Kids at Staller Center for the Arts at Stony Brook University (Nicolls Road, Stony Brook) on Sunday, March 10 at 4 p.m. Eight young tappers dance their way through life's milestones (think first love, school dance, graduation). Recommended for ages 10 and older. Price: $15.
"Clifford the Big Red Dog" -- Live at The Paramount (370 New York Ave., Huntington) on Tuesday, March 12, at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. A musical adventure featuring Clifford and his friend Emily Elizabeth as they learn how to be a good friend. Price: $19.50 and up.
Todd Oliver: Dogs Gone Wild at Van Nostrand Theatre at Suffolk Community College (Crooked Hill Rd., Brentwood) on Sunday, March 10, at 3 p.m. Comedian and ventriloquist Todd Oliver appears on stage with three talking dogs. Price: $11.
Dora the Explorer Live! Dora's Pirate Adventure at Bellmore Movies (222 Pettit Ave., Bellmore) on Monday, March 25, through Saturday, March 30, at 11 a.m. Watch Dora come to life on stage and have a chance to meet the characters after the show. Price: $10.
Mr. Easter Bunny at BroadHollow Theatre Company (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont) on Saturday, March 23, at 4 p.m. Billy and Betty try to convince their dad, the mayor of Easterville, that you're never too old to believe in the Easter Bunny. Price: $12.
"The Little Mermaid" at Sacred Heart Academy (47 Cathedral Dr., Hempstead). Take a trip under the sea with Ariel and her friends. Show times: Friday, March 8, and Saturday, March 9, at 7 p.m.; Sunday, March 10, at 2 p.m.; Friday, March 1,5 and Saturday, March 16, at 7 p.m. Price: $15 at the door, $10 if you order in advance through the school.
"Peter Rabbit" at NYCB Theatre (960 Brush Hollow Rd., Westbury) on Saturday, March 30 at 11 a.m. Based on the classic Beatrix Potter children's books, follow along as Peter, a mischievous, charming and brave rabbit overcomes obstacles and avoids danger. Price: $11.50, $16.50.
