Family-friendly performances on Long Island in February
Children love watching their favorite characters come to life onstage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout January to help you plan a fun-filled day.
Aladdin at Studio Threatre (141 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst) on Saturdays through Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. All of your favorite characters appear in this adaptation of the Disney hit, including Aladdin, Jasmine and the Genie. Price: $8.
Doo-Wop Wed Widing Hood at BroadHollow's BayWay Arts Center (265 E. Main St., East Islip) on Saturdays at 2 p.m. A hilarious take on the classic fairy tale, set in the 1950s, in which three princes want to woo Red Riding Hood and a hula-hoop competition ensues. Price: $12, $10 (in advance).
Harlem Globetrotters at Nassau Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The Harlem Globetrotters give fans the chance to decide which rules will impact the game including "Hot Hand Jersey," "Make or Miss," "Trick Shot Challenge." Price: $17.
Ovations Dance Repertory Company: Disney's The Little Mermaid Jr. at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (71 E. Main St.) on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. This children's production follows a beautiful mermaid who longs to leave her ocean home behind and live in the world above. Price: $14-$20.
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales at Madison Theatre at Molloy College (1000 Hempstead Ave., Rockville Centre) on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 2-2:30 p.m. A children's production deconstructing the tradition of the fairy tale (characters slide in and out of tales). Price: $25, $15 children.
Kids for Kids Productions: School House Rock Jr. at St. John's University - Oakdale (500 Montauk Hwy.) on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. A musical based on the 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math, science and politics through song. Price: $15.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland at Take-One Performing Arts Academy (1021 Portion Rd., Farmingville) on Sunday, Feb. 16, Saturday, Feb. 22 and Sunday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. This children's production, based on the book by Lewis Carroll, about a girl who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar creatures. Price: $10.
Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr. at Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts (2 E. Main St.) on Saturdays and Sundays starting Feb. 8 at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 17, Tuesday, Feb. 18, Thursday, Feb. 20 and Friday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. This musical based on the 1991 Disney film of the same name follows Belle who must learn to love an enchanted prince trapped in the body of a beast. Price: $15.
Big Wooden Horse Theatre Company: Stuck at Tilles Center (Route 25A, Brookville) on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. Based on the book by Oliver Jeffers, this children's production about a young boy who gets his kite stuck in a tree. Price: $15-$23.
Kids for Kids Productions: West Side Story at St. John's University - Oakdale (500 Montauk Hwy.) on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. A musical loosely based on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" involving rival street gangs in 1950s New York City. Price: $15.
Aspiring Young Artists presents "Celebrate" at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) on Monday, Feb. 17 at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Music and dance styles that celebrate roots in Africa, recommended for children ages 5 and older. Price: $5 with museum admission ($12), $10 theater only.
Cinderella at Theatre Three (412 Main St., Port Jefferson) on Saturdays at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19, Thursday, Feb. 20 and Friday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. A children's theater performance of this classic fairy tale. Price: $10.
Hercules HL at BroadHollow Theatre Company (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont) on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. A comic adaptation of this Greek myth featuring fun, fantasy and adventure. Price: $12, $10 (in advance).
Robinson Crusoe at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center (76 Main St., Westhampton) on Friday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. A musical adaptation of Daniel Defoe's classic novel performed by students. Price: $15.
