Children love watching their favorite characters come to life on stage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout August to help you plan a fun-filled day.

"Hudson Vagabond Puppets: Butterfly!" at Heckscher Park (2 Prime Ave., Huntington) on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 7:30 p.m. A puppet troupe follows the life journey of Mari, a monarch butterfly. Price: Free.

"Disney's Aladdin Jr." at Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School (25 Mud Rd., Setauket) on Thursday, Aug. 7 and Friday, Aug. 8, at noon. A musical based on the popular Disney film. Price: $15.

KIDFEST #1: "The Great Pizza Contest" at John Drew Theater at Guild Hall (158 Main St., East Hampton) on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. There are two feuding pizzamakers in the funny town of Mozzarella. Kids from the audience become the citizens and help Mayor Anne Chovi decide who makes the best pizza in town, for ages 3 to 8. Price: $16 adults, $13 children.

"How I Became a Pirate" at CM Performing Arts Center (931 Montauk Hwy., Oakdale) on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m.; Monday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m.; Thursday, Aug. 14, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 15, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m.; Monday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m.; Thursday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Friday, Aug. 22, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 23 at 11 a. m. and 2 p.m. A children's pirate fantasy based on the book by Melinda Long. Price: $12.

"Sleeping Beauty" at Theatre Three (412 Main St., Port Jefferson) on Saturday, Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. and Friday, Aug. 8, at 1:30 p.m. A fairy tale by Charles Perrault in which, after being snubbed by the royal family, a malevolent fairy places a curse on a princess which only a prince can break. Price: $10.

"Pinocchio" at Theatre Three (412 Main St., Port Jefferson) on Friday, Aug. 8 and 15, at 11 a.m.; Saturday, Aug. 9 and 11, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The classic tale about a puppet, created by a woodcarver named Geppetto in a small Italian village, who dreams of becoming a real boy. Price: $10.

KIDFEST #2: "National Marionette Theatre: Beauty and the Beast" at John Drew Theater at Guild Hall (158 Main St., East Hampton) on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 5 p.m. A classic tale about an enchanted prince in the form of a hideous beast and the intelligent woman who must learn to love him. Price: $16 adults, $13 children.

"The Amazing Max" at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (71 E. Main St., Patchogue) on Friday, Aug. 15, at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Illusionist Max Darwin's high-energy show mixes magic, comedy and audience participation. Price: $12-$18.

KIDFEST #3: "Nelson Illusions: Smoke & Mystery Tour" at John Drew Theater at Guild Hall (158 Main St., East Hampton) on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. A theatrical spectacle, with audience participation, combining original illusions and magic. Price: $16 adults, $13 children.

"The Little Mermaid" at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) on Saturdays and Sundays, at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., starting Aug. 9 through Aug. 24. Based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, a young mermaid is willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul and the love of a human prince. Price: $12.

"The Wizard of Oz" at Carriage House Theater, Vanderbilt Mansion (180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport) on Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 24 at 1 p.m. A musical based on "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum, in which a young girl embarks on a quest to see the wizard who can help her return home. Price: $10, $8 children, free for children ages 3 and younger.

"Big Apple Circus" at John Drew Theater at Guild Hall (158 Main St., East Hampton) on Sunday, Aug. 24, at 5:30 p.m. A one-ring circus with horses, acrobats and clowns. Price: $50 and $75; $125 includes prime orchestra and VIP reception, 3 p.m., at a private residence.

"Peter Pan The Musical" at Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts (2 E. Main St., Smithtown) on Fridays, at 7 p.m. (starting Aug. 8); Saturdays, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sundays, at 3 p.m. through Aug. 24. Follow a mischievous boy who can fly and spends his never-ending childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland. Price: $30 adults, $20 children.

"Disney's The Jungle Book" at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (71 E. Main St., Patchogue) on Fridays and Saturdays, at 10:30 a.m. through Aug. 8. A family-friendly performance based on Rudyard Kipling's classic tale adapted from the film by Disney. Price: $18.

"The Little Mermaid" at Ballet Long Island (1863 Pond Rd., Ronkonkoma) on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. and 12.15 p.m. This Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale tells a story filled with magic and love. Price: $18 adult, $9 children.

KIDFEST #4: "Comedy Dog Show: Johnny Peers and the Muttville Comix" at John Drew Theater at Guild Hall (158 Main St., East Hampton) on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 5 p.m. Slapstick comedy act featuring more than a dozen performing dogs. Price: $16 adults, $13 children.

Gustafer Yellowgold's Show at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) on Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A humorous and touching concert of live songs, stories and animation. Price: $10.

Ovations Dance Repertory Company: "The Wizard of Oz" at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (71 E. Main St., Patchogue) on Friday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 23, at 1 and 7 p.m. A musical rendition based on “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum. Price: $14-$28.
