Family-friendly performances in May on Long Island
Children love watching their favorite characters come to life on stage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout May to help you plan a fun-filled day.
"Erth's Dinosaur Zoo Life" at Tilles Center (Route 25A, Brookville) on Saturday May 3 and Sunday, May 4 at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Children ages 4 and up can journey through prehistoric Australia where they can help feed, water and care for dinosaurs. Price: $25.
"A Year with Frog and Toad" at Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) on Saturdays in May at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. through May 17 and Sunday, May 18 at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. A musical based on the popular children's book about a cheerful frog and a grumpy toad, for ages 3 and up. Price: $12.
"Disney's High School Musical 2: On Stage" at Islip Town Hall West (401 Main St., West Islip) on Friday, May 9 at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 10 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., Sunday, May 11 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. "Disney's High School Musical 2" performed by the teen cast in evening, the junior cast performs Saturday and Sunday afternoons, tickets available online or at the door. Price: $15.
"Seussical Jr." at the Smithtown Center for Performing Arts (2 E. Main St., Smithtown) on Saturdays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 11 a.m., excluding May 11. Families can watch a youth performance based on the works of Dr. Seuss. Price: $15.
"Neverland" at Sid Jacobson JCC (300 Forest Dr., East Hills) on Sundays in May through May 18, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., as well as Thursday, May 15, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Performers in grades K-2 take the stage in an adaptation of Peter Pan.
"Click, Clack, Moo" at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center (76 Main St., Westhampton Beach) on Saturday, May 3 at 3 p.m. A family musical based on a classic children's book of the same name. Price: $15 to $25.
"101 Dalmatians" at BroadHollow's BayWay Arts Center (265 E. Main St., East Islip) on Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m. Cruella De Vil plots to steal Dalmatian puppies for her new fur coat. Price: $12, $10 (in advance).
"Not Just for Kids: Sid the Science Kid" at Staller Center for the Arts (Stony Brook University, Nicolls Road, Stony Brook) on Sunday, May 4 at 4 p.m. An interactive show based on the PBS Kids television show, exploring the science of the unknown through puppets. Price: $15.
"Tilly the Trickster" at CM Performing Arts Center (931 Montauk Hwy., Oakdale) on Saturday, May 10, 17 and 31 at 2 p.m. Adapted from the book by Molly Shannon, this children's musical is about a mischievous girl who loves nothing more that causing trouble. Price: $12.
"Jungle Book" at the Carriage House Theater, Vanderbilt Mansion (180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport) on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m. Check out this children's production based on the book by Rudyard Kipling. Price: $10 adults, $8 children.
"The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley" at John W. Engeman Theater (250 Main St., Northport) on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. through May 18. Based on the 1964 children's book by Jeff Brown, the show lets the audience follow along as Stanley Lambchop scours the globe. Price: $15.
"The Prince Street Players: Cinderella" at Dix Hills Performing Arts Center (305 N. Service Rd., Dix Hills) on Saturday, May 3 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Sunday, May 4 at noon and 3 p.m. A slapstick version of the classic fairy tale in which an orphan girl is magically transformed into a real-life princess. Price: $10.
"Alice in Wonderland" at BroadHollow Theatre Company (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont) on Saturday May 10 and 17 at 2 p.m.; Sunday, May 25 at noon. Join Alice, the Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat and more in this classic musical. Price: $12, $10 (in advance).
"Disney's The Little Mermaid, Jr." at Studio Theatre (141 S. Wellwood Ave., Lindenhurst) on Saturdays in May through May 17 at 2 p.m. A musical based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, about a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea to gain the love of a human prince. Price: $12, $10 (in advance).
