Family-friendly performances in July on Long Island
Children love watching their favorite characters come to life on stage, and there's no shortage of theatrical events on Long Island. Since many of the shows require some forethought, here's a sampling of family-friendly shows throughout July to help you plan a fun-filled day.
"Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" at John W. Engeman Theater (250 Main St., Northport) on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays, at 10:30 a.m. through July 13. This funny musical follows Alexander during his very bad day: He wakes up with gum in his hair, his best friend abandons him on the playground and his mom forgets to pack dessert in his lunchbox. Price: $15.
"The Wizard of Oz" at Carriage House Theater, Vanderbilt Mansion (180 Little Neck Rd., Centerport) on Saturdays and Sundays in July at 1 p.m. A musical based on "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum, in which a young girl embarks on a quest to see the wizard who can help her return home. Price: $10, $8 children, free children ages 3 and younger.
"Disney's Cinderella Kids" at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (71 E. Main St., Patchogue) on Fridays and Saturdays through July 19, at 10:30 a.m. and Friday, July 18 at 1 p.m. The classic fairy tale comes to life on stage, featuring all your favorite characters. Price: $12-$18.
"Peter Pan The Musical" at Smithtown Center for the Performing Arts (2 E. Main St., Smithtown) on Saturdays in July (starting July 12), at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Sunday, July 13, at 3 p.m.; Thursday, July 17, at 7 p.m.; Friday, July 18, at 7 p.m.; Sunday, July 20, at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, July 24, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Friday, July 25, at 7 p.m.; Sunday, July 27, at 3 p.m. and Thursday, July 31, at 7 p.m. Follow a mischievous boy who can fly and spends his never-ending childhood adventuring on the small island of Neverland. Price: $30 adults, $20 children.
"Disney's My Son Pinocchio, Jr." at CM Performing Arts Center (931 Montauk Hwy., Oakdale) on Saturday, July 5, at 2 p.m.; Monday, July 7, at 10 a.m.; Thursday, July 10, at 2 p.m.; Friday, July 11, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Saturday, July 12, at 2 p.m.; Monday July 14, at 10 a.m.; Thursday, July 17 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Friday, July 18, at 10 a.m.; Friday, July 18, at 2 p.m. and Saturday, July 19, at 2 p.m. A children's musical based on the classic tale of the toymaker Geppetto and his little wooden puppet. "The Wizard of Oz" at Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City) on Saturday, July 12 and 19, at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.; Sunday, July 13 and 20, at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Follow Dorothy, the Tinman, Scarecrow and Lion as they follow the Yellow Brick Road to Oz. Price: $12.
Zoppe: An Italiam Family Circus at Westhampton Beach Great Lawn (The corner of Main Street and Potunk Lane) on Thursday, July 31, at 6:30 p.m. (runs through Aug. 3). Nino the clown leads the one-ring cirucs with acrobatic feats, equestrian showmanship, canine capers and plenty of audience participation. Price: $29-$54.
"Disney's The Jungle Book" at Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (71 E. Main St., Patchogue) on Fridays and Saturdays, starting July 25, at 10:30 a.m. A family-friendly performance based on Rudyard Kipling's classic tale adapted from the film by Disney. Price: $18.
"Beauty and the Beast", a live performance by Plaza Productions of this classic fairy tale, will take place at Heckscher Park (2 Prime Ave., Huntington) on Tuesday, July 1, at 7:30 p.m.; Ellsworth Allen Park (Motor Avenue, Farmingdale) on Monday, July 21, at 1:30 p.m.; Marjorie R.
