Easter egg hunting - at an organic farm

Setauket's Benner Farm offers an Easter egg hunt

Setauket's Benner Farm offers an Easter egg hunt in a health-conscious setting.

As a kid, I loved Easter egg hunts -- who wouldn’t love tearing through an emerald field on one of the first days of Spring, turning every rock in the name of chocolate and Peeps?

My wife and I are parents now, and this is the first spring in which our son will be old enough to appreciate the glory of the egg hunt. And we’ve found a venue to blend our love of multicolored eggs with our passion for organic parenting - Benner’s Farm in East Setauket.

Benner’s Farm, located about two miles from Stony Brook University, is a 15-acre family homestead on a site that has served as farmland since the 1700s. Since the 1970s, the Benner family has farmed the land organically, with strawberries and pumpkins serving as the primary crops. The family uses the farm as an educational tool to teach the public about sustainable farming practices.

This year, the Benners are hosting three egg hunts on Easter Sunday, at 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. It will be a traditional egg hunt, with eggs containing candy or tickets for prizes scattered about the farm. Families will also be able to check out the farm between noon and 4 p.m., staff said.

Farm staff will be on hand and happy to share ideas about organic farming, said Susanna Gatz, who works at the farm. Gatz added that there are ways to incorporate healthy practices into Easter, which is typically a candy-heavy holiday.

“You can use beet juice to dye Easter eggs, and they become purple maroon,” she said. “There are ways you can use natural products.”

Benner’s Farm is located at 56 Gnarled Hollow Road in East Setauket. Admission to the egg hunt is $7 for adults and $6 for children and seniors. More information is available at bennersfarm.com, by calling 631-689-5343, or email folks@bennersfarm.com.
