October marks two years since superstorm Sandy pummeled Long Island, and according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, 85 percent of Americans are still not prepared for potential disasters.

To help Long Islanders plan ahead in case of a catastrophe, The Allstate Foundation and Points of Light, an in-person emergency preparedness community service program, is hosting a free event for families on Saturday at Harry Chapin Lakeside Theater in Eisenhower Park (1899 Hempstead Tpke., East Meadow).

Kids and parents can work side-by-side with crisis management organizations to build free disaster kits they can use in the event of an unforeseen emergency. The starter kits will include a whistle, trash bag, dust mask, hand sanitizer, first aid kit, water bottle, rain poncho and a battery-free flashlight.

“In addition to having a catastrophe kit readily available for you and your loved ones in the event of a storm, we encourage that residents create an updated home inventory by walking through their house with a video recorder or camera,” said Julia Gazzio, a Rockville Centre Allstate agent. “Document valuable items and place the list along with other important financial and insurance paperwork in a waterproof container. Be sure to understand your insurance policies and what they cover."

The event takes place from 5 to 7 p.m., which precedes the free K.C. and The Sunshine Band concert that begins at 7 p.m.
