Harrison and I are taking a Long Island road trip. For the President’s Week break, he and I will heading out east and doing whatever we feel like doing along the way and back. I was lucky enough to take the time off from work; my husband, not so much. So this will be a special break with the boy, who has delighted in hearing that we would be driving the long way there and that it might take a couple of hours at least.

What does the 10-year-old want to do? For one thing, he wants to stop and buy pie at Briermere Farm. He was too young to remember having been there once, so I told him about the Riverhead roadside stop. His eyes light up when he hears that we will buy whatever flavor pie he wants and that he can eat as much of it as he’d like.

He also is excited about visiting the nearby Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center, which he has been to at least twice. He likes the idea of roaming the place free of a school field trip schedule this time.

But the highlight of being on the road, as it is always for us highway travelers in the family, is finding lodging for the night. And here, Harrison is most thrilled — we’ve booked a hotel with an indoor swimming pool, which we plan to close down the night we stay and open up as soon as the sun rises. We love to swim together when we go away.

We’ll see what other surprises await us.

I am holding on to these final years of innocent, cuddly, wide-eyed closeness as long as I can. He is already becoming self-conscious wearing his bathing suit in front of me. At least he still enjoys my company.
