8 things to do with your kids on Martin Luther King Day
Martin Luther King Day is approaching, and chances are you're scrambling to find something to do with your kids. If you're looking to get out of the house and have a little fun, here are a few things to do around Long Island on Martin Luther King Day, including family-friendly performances, animal encounters, crafts, indoor play and more.
Explore the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City). Learn about his life and create artwork inspired by his speeches and visions of peace from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Recommended for children ages 5 and older. Price: $3 with $12 museum admission.
See Cinderella at Bellmore Movies (222 Pettit Ave., Bellmore). Join everyone's favorite princess in a live performance of this classic fairy tale by Plaza Theatrical Productions at 11 a.m. Price: $10.
Learn about Color Chromatography at the Maritime Explorium (101 East Broadway, Port Jefferson). Find out what makes a color a color and then break them down to their chemical components from 1-5 p.m. Price: $5.
Watch a live children's theater performance of Winnie the Pooh at BroadHollow Theatre Company (700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont). Kids can join Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Tiger at 1 p.m. Price: $12, $10 in advance.
Go Behind-the-Scenes for a tour of the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center (431 E. Main St., Riverhead). At 1:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m., learn about the systems and procedures necessary to run the aquarium and visit the seal exhibit while it's under construction. $5 plus museum admission ($32.50 adults, $27.50 children).
Bundle up the kids and head out on a Seal Observation Cruise at Captain Lou Fleet (28A Woodcleft Ave., Freeport). Set sail from Freeport to view winter harbor seals from 12:30-3 p.m. A naturalist will be on board to discuss biology and behavior of seals and other marine life encountered. Reservations are required. Price: $26 adults, $22 seniors and children ages 3-12, free under 3.
Play video games at Battlegrounds (401 William Floyd Pkwy., Shirley). Tweens and teens can play the newest video games for Xbox 360, PS3 and the Wii from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Price: $8 for a full day of play.
